Missionaries of Charity - The House of Angels
Mother Teresa (1910 - 1997) was an Albanian, Roman Catholic nun, who founded the Missionaries of Charity in India in 1950. Its mission was to care for, in her own words, "the hungry, the naked, the homeless, the crippled, the blind, the lepers, all those people who feel unwanted, unloved, uncared for throughout society, people that have become a burden to the society and are shunned by everyone."
For over 45 years she ministered to the poor, sick, orphaned, and dying, while guiding the Missionaries of Charity's expansion, first throughout India and then in other countries. She won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 and India's highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, in 1980 for her humanitarian work.
Ethiopiaid has been working with Mother Teresa's Missionaries of Charity in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia since 1993. More recently, Ethiopiaid extended funding to the Mission's work in Dire Dawa, a city in eastern Ethiopia. The region it serves is far from Addis Ababa and the nuns here face quite different challenges. Follow the links below to find out more about the nuns' work in each of these locations.
